Regulations for sabbatical leave

Art. 1.

The FWO - Flanders may, upon the advice of the International Collaboration Committee, offer a sabbatical leave to a researcher who, at the start of the grant, fulfills at least one on the following requirements:

1° holds a ZAP‐ position of at least 80% (remunerated) at a Flemish university, or

2° is appointed for at least 80% (remunerated) as a ZAP-member to the Evangelical Protestant Faculty in Leuven or to the Faculty for Protestant Theology in Brussels, if the research is related to religious studies or theology, or

3° is appointed for at least 80% (remunerated) as an (associated) professor or (full) professor with PhD, affiliated to the Hogere Zeevaartschool if the application is related to research in nautical sciences, or

4° is appointed for at least 80% (remunerated) as an (associated) professor or (full) professor (or positions with equivalent English titles) with PhD, affiliated to the Vlerick Management School if the application is related to research in management sciences, or

5° is appointed for at least 80% (remunerated) as an (associated) professor or (full) professor with PhD, affiliated to the Antwerp Management School if the application is related to research in management sciences, or

6° is appointed for at least 80% (remunerated) as an (associated) professor or (full) professor with PhD to the Institute of Tropical Medicine if the application is related to research in tropical medicine and veterinary medicine and in healthcare in developing countries, or

7° holds a salaried ZAP-position of 5% (remunerated) at a Flemish university ánd he/she is a clinical head or deputy-clinical head or he/she holds an equivalent position in a university hospital.

The sabbatical leave has the objective to free the researcher from  any teaching duties in order to devote themselves full-time to their scientific research.

Art. 2.

The duration of the sabbatical leave is minimum 3 and maximum 12 months, and cannot be extended. The associated allowance in the amount of €2,500/month is paid to the host institution to which the beneficiary is affiliated. The allowance can be used by the host institution concerned to replace the applicant or to support the latter in his/her research.

Art. 3.

The beneficiary is required to send a report on his/her activities to the FWO – Flanders in the course of the quarter following the end of the sabbatical leave.

Art. 4.

The submission dates are 1 April and 1 October of every year. Applications must be submitted by the head of the host institution to the FWO – Flanders at least 3 months before the start of the sabbatical leave.
