Transitional measures for the PhD Fellowship, SB Grant, Research Grant and Research Projects programmes

In an extra newsletter, we announced the reform of the PhD Fellowship, SB Grant, and Research Projects support programmes, and the abolition of the Research Grant.   One of the consequences of this reform is that applicants who could submit an application for 2019 (start of the new programmes), will no longer be able to always do so afterwards. To ensure a smooth transition and allow everyone to timely adapt to the new situation, the FWO has planned a number of transitional measures. They are summarised below.

PhD Fellowship and SB Grant

For both types of predoctoral fellowship - PhD fellowship and SB grant - a total of two applications may be submitted from 2019 onwards (call open in 2018). Today, this is still two applications for each type of fellowship, i.e. a total of four applications.

In 2019, however, the following transitional measures will apply for those candidates who already submitted more than one application under the old regime:

  • those who already submitted two applications for a PhD fellowship, may apply once more for an SB grant;
  • those who already submitted two applications for a PhD fellowship and one application for an SB grant, may apply once more for an SB grant;
  • those who already submitted two applications for an SB grant, may apply once more for a PhD fellowship;
  • those who already submitted two applications for an SB grant and one application for a PhD fellowship, may apply once more for a PhD fellowship;
  • those who already applied once for a PhD fellowship and once for an SB grant, may apply once more for one of both channels.

In all of these cases, the rules of the current (not yet revised) regulations in terms of seniority of the candidate (degree and scientific experience) will continue to apply.

Research Grant

The Research Grant will be abolished. From 2019 it will no longer be possible to apply for a Research Grant, so no call for Research Grants will be opened in 2018.  For FWO postdoctoral researchers, it will be replaced by a flexible bench fee, which will make it possible to apply for extra research resources together with the application for the research fellowship.

Postdocs who start their fellowship on 1 October 2017 (current call) or 1 October 2018 (last call under the old procedure) will no longer be able to apply for a Research Grant, but will not have the opportunity either to propose a flexible bench fee. That is why this group of applicants, which in 2019 will be situated in the first or second year of the three-year postdoc fellowship, will be able to apply once more for a Research Grant.   Those who apply for a postdoctoral fellowship in 2018 will be able to apply at the same time for a Research Grant under the last regular call for this support channel.

Research Projects

From 2019, a candidate supervisor or candidate co-supervisor of a research project will only be able to submit a new project application if he/she has no more than two ongoing research projects and research applications combined. This maximum is, however, calculated on the 1st of January of the year following the year of the application, so that a project that is completed by that time will no longer be taken into account.

By the end of September 2017 it will be decided which transitional measures for projects can be taken.
