Brexit – FAQ

On 24 December 2020, the EU and the UK concluded an agreement on their future relationship. In any case, there will also be an impact on scientific research. Here we are trying to answer the main changes and frequently asked questions on FWO supported research.

PhD fellowships

Master’s degrees issued in the UK will continue to be recognised as equivalent to a EU degree for the application round with submission deadline 1 March 2021. It remains to be determined whether the recognition will continue to apply thereafter. If not, you can apply for recognition of equivalence, just as for other foreign degrees, with NARIC.

Projects fundamental research

As before, international cooperation with the UK will remain possible under this programme, including the possibility of allocating 10 percent of the project budget to a non-Flemish partner. This enables Flemish researchers to flexibly involve the required expertise from the UK and other countries in their research and to work together with non-Flemish research groups.

The UK will also continue to participate in the EU's EURATOM and Copernicus programmes.

Travel to the UK on a travel grant for a conference, short study visit or participation in a workshop/course will also be possible after Brexit, subject to compliance with the then applicable provisions for the movement of persons (see above section). Within the travel grant regulations, a transition period will apply in 2021, during which the UK will still be considered being “within Europe” for the interpretation of the current regulations. It remains to be determined whether this will continue to apply thereafter.
