490 new PhD fellowships awarded
The FWO Board of Trustees has awarded 294 PhD fellowships for fundamental research and 196 PhD fellowships for strategic basic research. These fellowships specifically support young researchers who are preparing to obtain a PhD. They can count on funding for two years with a one-off possibility of renewal for a further two years.
The aim of these fellowships is to enable young researchers to become independent critical scientists.
For the fundamental research fellowships, 1057 applications were submitted. There were 648 applications for the strategic basic research fellowships. This brings the success rate for the basic research fellowships to 27.7% and for the strategic basic research fellowships to 30.1%.
Some of the fellowships from this batch are financed by, among others, Kom op tegen Kanker (Fight against cancer) and INBO. Thus, this year Kom op tegen Kanker supports one fellowship, INBO two.
The FWO wishes all new fellows a lot of success!
