EuroHPC’s LUMI kick-off event in Belgium
On January, 14th the Belgian High Performance Computing (HPC) community organised the EuroHPC’s LUMI kick-off, an online event with HPC use cases and the latest EU supercomputing news.
EU is making lots of effort to develop a World Class Supercomputing Ecosystem in Europe. The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, for example, will allow the EU and participating countries to coordinate their efforts and pool their resources with the objective of deploying in Europe world-class exascale supercomputers. Belgium is also taking part in this effort, among others via its participation to the LUMI-consortium. The LUMI (Large Unified Modern Infrastructure) consortium countries are Finland, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Iceland, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and Switzerland. Bringing together their unique expertise and experience, these countries and the European Commission will acquire, host and operate the LUMI pre-exascale supercomputer in Kajaani, Finland.
Flanders is participating in the LUMI-consortium via the associations and the Flemish Supercomputer Centre (managed by FWO). With access to the new infrastructure, Flemish researchers can access world-class computing resources, which have a direct positive impact on research in nearly all scientific disciplines. In practice, this allows researchers to make more calculations within a shorter period of time and study larger or more accurate models than ever before for cutting edge research. The state-of-the-art computing resources will also lay grounds to carry out research in areas, which have previously been out of reach, increasing the possibilities for scientific breakthroughs with immense societal impact, such as understanding climate change.
This kick-off event brought together 250+ participants of the wide Belgian and EU user community to learn about the LUMI consortium and the supercomputer specifications. They discovered several possible use cases for the LUMI machine and got first-hand information on the newly competence centre, EuroCC. Presentations can be found here.
