Title of the project: The differential effects of attention and awareness on visual perception.
From the jury report:
This is an outstanding proposal. Van Boxtel is an outstanding researcher, completely prepared for independent work and with excellent collaboration both in the Netherlands and internationally.
The jury was impressed by the applicant’s ability to direct his own research path, obtain research funding, and work with so many highly qualified people. This applicant has a wealth of experience working with others on important tasks. He has obtained a number of grants on his own and has supported his own research. He has wide experience in different labs, and has already accumulated a very impressive publication list in very good and selective journals.
This proposal provides important mechanisms by which both attention and consciousness may work and thus provide a much more important perspective that previous work in this field. As Van Boxtel states this changes the significance of this whole approach by allowing one to examine both interaction and independence at the level of mechanism. Another virtue of the proposal is the extension of the issue beyond afterimages to central aspects of perception to the target. This will only enhance the likely impact of this research.
