Support programmes
With our financial resources we support individual researchers and research teams with personal fellowships and project funding.
All about support programmes
Flanders Hydraulics (WL) is a Flemish centre of expertise for research and advice on hydraulic, nautical, sediment-related and hydrological topics. It investigates the impact of human activity and nature on water systems and the consequences for navigation and hydraulic structures. As a scientific institute and technical support service, WL is a division of the department of Mobility and Public Works of the Government of Flanders. Flanders Hydraulics supports the preparation and execution of the policy of the Government of Flanders by providing comprehensive, scientifically sound knowledge, knowledge products and advice on coastal, estuarine and river systems.
WL is committing itself to the yearly financing of a number of fellowships for young promising researchers. It concerns doctoral fellowships fundamental and/or strategic basic research and/or postdoctoral (junior/senior) fellowships. The number of available fellowships will be decided upon each year. The fellowships for doctoral researchers will start for the call 2023 and for postdoctoral researchers for the call 2024.
This ambition is established in a collaboration protocol between the FWO and WL, thus creating the doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships "WL - FWO". These fellowships, including bench fee, are financed by WL. The fellowships fit in the regular doctoral and postdoctoral programs of the FWO, and applications are submitted and evaluated in the concerned calls for proposals.
Only regular FWO call fellowship applications at which WL has agreed to act as an additional host institute, and that were approved by FWO but could not be financed, are eligible for a fellowship "WL - FWO".
Through an agreement/contract between the fellow and the FWO, these fellowships are subject to the FWO regulations for doctoral resp. postdoctoral fellowships. WL draws up an collaboration agreement with the main host institute involved.
